The President’s Volunteer Service Award Is Temporarily Paused—Here’s Why We’re Still Hopeful

A Pause in Recognition, But Not in Service

We recently learned that the President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) program is currently paused by AmeriCorps. While this may be discouraging to some who have worked so hard to earn this honor, we’re choosing to look at this as a time of growth, reflection, and opportunity.

The Global Volunteer Recognition Program (GVRP) is committed to keeping our volunteers informed and uplifted during this pause. We believe that AmeriCorps is using this time to reevaluate the program with the hope of making it more impactful and accessible than ever before.

What’s Going On with PVSA?

According to this AP News article, AmeriCorps has paused the PVSA while facing funding changes and internal reevaluation. This pause does not signal the end of the program but rather a shift—an opportunity for AmeriCorps to modernize and relaunch the PVSA with even greater reach and significance.

The Bigger Picture: Points of Light Steps Forward

In the meantime, Points of Light, the nonprofit founded by President George H.W. Bush, is working to double American volunteerism—aiming for 150 million volunteers annually by 2035. Their campaign is backed by $100 million in new funding and focuses on accessibility, digital engagement, and long-term community investment.

This shows us that while one recognition program pauses, the spirit of service is thriving.

What This Means for You

While you may not be able to submit hours for PVSA recognition right now, the mission hasn’t stopped—and neither have we.

Continue logging your hours using your GVRP tracker
Support other volunteers by sharing your stories with us
Look out for updates on the PVSA website: https://presidentialserviceawards.gov/login

At GVRP, we’ll continue to offer alternative recognition options, volunteer opportunities, and national award nominations through other programs.

Why We’re Hopeful

We believe this temporary pause will lead to:

  • Stronger award standards
  • Improved digital submission systems
  • More inclusive recognition criteria
  • Broader volunteer representation

When the PVSA returns, it may do so with new features, faster processing, and deeper impact.

What You Can Do During the Pause

  1. Keep volunteering! The heart of service doesn't need a certificate.
  2. Share your impact. Send us your stories and photos to feature on our site.

We’re optimistic about the future of volunteer recognition and proud of everything our members continue to do across the globe. The pause is only temporary. The passion for service is forever.
