Gregory Sachan

My name is Gregory Sachan, and I am from Raleigh, North Carolina. I received my NCOEMS EMT-B license after interning for over 200 hours and completing a certification course with Wake County EMS since I am interested in pursuing a healthcare career to help ensure marginalized groups in my community receive appropriate medical interventions. Currently, I am participating in the Duke Gap Year Program (DGYP), pursuing opportunities with the American Red Cross and the University of North Carolina-Rex Hospital before joining Duke University's Class of 2029. With the American Red Cross, I serve as the Development Chair for the North Carolina Youth Leadership Council (NCYLC), promoting leadership development among my peers when they develop events that support youth volunteers in North Carolina with different aspects of the Red Cross mission. I also serve as the NC Red Cross East Youth Chapter Advisor, helping oversee the development of the club's virtual meetings and opportunities that serve youth volunteers throughout the eastern region of North Carolina. Beyond my efforts with American Red Cross Youth, I have volunteered over 200 hours as a Blood Donor Ambassador with the American Red Cross since January 2023, assisting blood donors with preliminary donation forms and post-donation care at Red Cross Blood Centers. Through my efforts with the NC American Red Cross, including these opportunities, I was recognized as the NC American Red Cross Greater Triangle Area Chapter (GTAC) 2024 Youth Volunteer of the Year, recording over 700 lifetime hours until December 2024. Along with volunteering through the American Red Cross, I volunteer with UNC-Rex's College Volunteer Program, assisting patients with their cancer rehabilitation activities (e.g., routine exercises) and recording vital signs. As a volunteer, I also facilitated communication between patients and medical personnel to assist with patient post-operative experiences in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
