Does every Global Volunteer Recognition Program award require membership?
No. The Global Volunteer Recognition Program™ offers two clear recognition paths. Member-exclusive awards are available only to people with an active annual membership for the applicable recognition year. Open recognition opportunities, including the Global Student Citizenship & Service Award and Military Community Volunteer Impact Award, do not require membership.
Member-exclusive awards are offered separately so each member can choose the recognition that fits their service journey while the overall annual membership fee remains as affordable as possible. The exception is the digital Sustained Commitment milestone certificate, which is automatically included when a member reaches a qualifying membership milestone.
Member-exclusive volunteer awards
Annual membership opens access to recognition pathways designed to document service hours, long-term commitment, volunteer leadership, and project impact. The membership year and recognition year must match when an award is tied to activity completed during a specific calendar year.
Global Volunteer Awards™
Annual Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum recognition for qualifying members who complete and document eligible volunteer service between January 1 and December 31.

- The member's personal contribution and resulting impact must be documented
- Optional Community Engagement Distinction available at no extra cost for qualifying projects submitted in advance

Why are most member awards purchased separately? Offering optional awards separately lets members build a recognition path around their own goals instead of increasing the annual membership fee to include awards they may not need. Membership provides access to these exclusive opportunities, but purchasing an award does not replace its eligibility, documentation, or review requirements.

Volunteer awards open to nonmembers
These reviewed recognition opportunities allow students and qualifying members of the military community to apply or be nominated without purchasing an annual membership.
Global Student Citizenship & Service Award
A criteria-based student award celebrating the complete picture of a student's citizenship, character, kindness, leadership, service, responsibility, and positive impact.
- Global Volunteer Recognition Program membership is not required
- No fixed minimum number of volunteer hours
- Available to students at multiple educational levels
- Homeschool students may be nominated
- Nominations may come from families, educators, mentors, schools, or organizations
- Digital, printed, and honor cord options may be available
Military Community Volunteer Impact Award
An earned award honoring qualifying members of the military community whose commitment to service extends beyond official military duties.
- Open to active-duty, National Guard, and Reserve members
- Open to veterans, military spouses, and qualifying military dependents or family members
- Requires 50 qualifying volunteer hours within one January 1 through December 31 calendar year
- Hours from different calendar years cannot be combined
- Global Volunteer Recognition Program membership is not required
- Military community affiliation and volunteer service are verified during review

Global Volunteer Awards hour requirements
The member's applicable age group and total approved service hours determine the recognition level. Final award levels are determined after the Global Volunteer Recognition Program reviews the submission.

Age-group note: When a member moves into a different age category during the award year, the applicable category is generally based on the age the member held for at least seven months during that calendar year.
Membership alone does not guarantee an award. Hours, service eligibility, supporting information, and all other requirements remain subject to review.
Military community award note: The Military Community Volunteer Impact Award uses one fixed minimum of 50 qualifying hours rather than the Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum levels above. Membership is not required.
What information may be required?
Documentation depends on the award. Strong records help the Global Volunteer Recognition Program understand what was completed, who contributed, and what changed because of the service.
Hours-based service records

Leadership documentation
- Description of the leadership demonstrated

- Contact who can confirm the contribution when available
Project impact documentation
- Project name, purpose, dates, and community need
- Member's specific role and actions

Student and military documentation
- Complete student nomination information when applicable
- Non-sensitive proof of qualifying military community affiliation

Documentation does not automatically make an activity eligible. The Global Volunteer Recognition Program may request clarification or additional information when a submission is incomplete or cannot be verified.

Awards administered by the Global Volunteer Recognition Program are separate from the President's Volunteer Service Award. The Military Community Volunteer Impact Award is not a federal, Department of Defense, or military branch award.
Purchasing a membership, certificate, medal, pin, or recognition package does not replace eligibility requirements and does not guarantee approval. Recognition is issued only after the applicable requirements and review process have been completed.

Which awards require membership?
Membership is required for the Global Volunteer Awards™, Sustained Commitment Member Milestone Certificate, Excellence in Volunteer Leadership Award, and Volunteer Project Impact Award. Membership is not required for the Global Student Citizenship & Service Award or Military Community Volunteer Impact Award.
Are member-exclusive awards included in the annual membership fee?
Most member-exclusive award products are purchased separately. This lets members choose the recognition path that fits their goals while helping keep the overall annual membership fee affordable. A digital Sustained Commitment certificate is automatically included when a member reaches a qualifying 3-year, 5-year, or 10-year milestone.
Do membership years have to be consecutive for the Sustained Commitment milestone?
No. Qualifying membership years do not have to be consecutive. The milestone is based on the total number of verified Global Volunteer Recognition Program membership years.
Is there a minimum number of hours for the leadership or project impact awards?
No. Neither award has a fixed minimum number of volunteer hours. The leadership award is based on the leadership demonstrated and documented. The project award is based on the member's meaningful contribution and the documented impact created.
What is the Community Engagement Distinction?
It is an optional distinction available at no extra cost to Volunteer Project Impact Award applicants whose qualifying project was submitted in advance, accepted for Global Volunteer Recognition Program calendar and social media awareness through the official Facebook co-host process, completed, documented, and approved for the standard award. Review the project award page for every requirement.
Does purchasing an award guarantee recognition?
No. Purchasing a membership or award product does not guarantee approval. The recipient must meet the applicable eligibility, documentation, and review requirements.
Can remote or virtual volunteer service qualify?
Yes. Remote or virtual service may qualify when it provides a legitimate volunteer or community benefit, is accurately documented, and meets the requirements of the selected award.
Can someone qualify for more than one award?
Potentially, yes. The person must independently meet every requirement for each award. Approval for one award does not automatically establish eligibility for another.
Can homeschool students receive recognition?
Yes. Homeschool students may be nominated for the Global Student Citizenship & Service Award. They may also pursue member-exclusive awards when they hold the correct membership and meet all applicable requirements.
Do military community award hours need to be verified before applying?
No. The volunteer hours do not need to be pre-verified. The Global Volunteer Recognition Program reviews and verifies the service documentation during the application process. Qualifying military community affiliation must also be verified, but applicants should not upload a military identification card.
Can past volunteer service be submitted?
Past service may be reviewed when the requirements of the selected award are met. For the Global Volunteer Awards™, the membership year, service year, and requested recognition year must match. For the Military Community Volunteer Impact Award, all 50 qualifying hours must fall within one January 1 through December 31 calendar year. Always review the current award page before submitting past service.
Are Global Volunteer Recognition Program awards the same as the President's Volunteer Service Award?
No. Awards administered by the Global Volunteer Recognition Program are independent recognition programs. They are separate from the President's Volunteer Service Award and are not federal government awards.
