Excellence in Volunteer Leadership Award
Leadership does not always come with a formal title. It can begin when someone identifies a need, brings people together, improves a volunteer project, supports other volunteers, or takes responsibility for helping an initiative succeed.
The Excellence in Volunteer Leadership Award from the Global Volunteer Recognition Program™ recognizes active members who demonstrate meaningful leadership through volunteer service, community involvement, advocacy, mentoring, project coordination, or service-focused initiatives.
This member-exclusive award is open to students and adults of all ages and may recognize leadership demonstrated locally, nationally, internationally, in person, or remotely.
What Does the Excellence in Volunteer Leadership Award Recognize?
This award recognizes members who go beyond participating and take an active role in guiding, organizing, strengthening, or improving volunteer service.
Qualifying leadership may include:
-
Creating or leading a volunteer project
-
Coordinating volunteers, schedules, supplies, or service activities
-
Recruiting, welcoming, training, or mentoring volunteers
-
Identifying and responding to a community need
-
Improving an existing volunteer program or process
-
Leading a fundraiser, donation drive, cleanup, awareness campaign, or service event
-
Helping a team overcome an unexpected challenge
-
Encouraging others to become involved in service
-
Developing an independent community-impact initiative
-
Using advocacy, education, creativity, or digital tools to support a cause
-
Demonstrating initiative when a formal leadership position was not available
Applicants do not need to hold an official title such as president, coordinator, director, or team captain. The Global Volunteer Recognition Program recognizes that meaningful volunteer leadership can happen in both formal and informal roles.
Who Is Eligible?
To qualify for the Excellence in Volunteer Leadership Award, the recipient must:
-
Have an active Global Volunteer Recognition Program annual membership for the applicable recognition year
-
Demonstrate leadership through volunteer service or a community-impact initiative

Complete the leadership activity between January 1 and December 31 of the applicable recognition year
-
Provide sufficient information for the Global Volunteer Recognition Program to review the achievement

-

The membership year and leadership recognition year must match. For example, leadership demonstrated during 2027 requires a 2027 Global Volunteer Recognition Program membership.

How Is Leadership Evaluated?
The Global Volunteer Recognition Program considers:
-
Initiative: Did the member recognize a need or take responsibility for helping?
-
Leadership: Did the member guide, organize, mentor, coordinate, encourage, or support others?
-
Contribution: What actions did the member personally complete?
-
Impact: How did the work benefit people, an organization, a cause, or a community?
-
Problem-solving: Did the member respond effectively to a challenge or improve an existing effort?
-
Documentation: Is there enough information to understand and confirm the achievement?
A large event, formal title, or extensive volunteer-hour total is not required. Leadership may be demonstrated through one significant project, an ongoing responsibility, or a series of related activities completed during the recognition year.
