The Global Volunteer Recognition Program proudly welcomes Major Bensson Samuel as a distinguished member whose service reflects extraordinary dedication, compassion, and leadership.
Major Samuel is a physician and United States Army Reservist whose commitment to serving vulnerable populations has spanned years of continuous volunteerism. In 2018, he founded Grace Wellness Clinic, a charity-based medical clinic dedicated to providing care for patients who lack financial resources. Through this clinic, he has treated patients exclusively on a referral basis without collecting reimbursements, ensuring access to quality healthcare for underserved communities.
His commitment to addressing food insecurity has also made a significant impact. In 2017, Major Samuel donated 30,000 pounds of food through Feeding America, helping ensure families in the Chippewa community had access to essential nourishment. His leadership in coordinating food deliveries reflects a hands-on approach to meeting urgent community needs.
In addition to his medical and humanitarian work, Major Samuel has demonstrated unwavering dedication to addiction recovery services. As a volunteer provider with New Hope House, an inpatient addiction treatment center facing severe funding challenges, he contributed thousands of hours of service. Between October 2020 and December 2021, he was on call for over 10,000 hours, with nearly 1,750 hours spent on-site, supporting individuals battling substance use disorders.
From October 2022 through June 2024, as part of his Army Reserve service requirements, Major Samuel continued providing care through Grace Wellness Clinic and related arrangements. During this time, he was on call for more than 15,000 hours and served 450 hours on-site. He also fulfilled the role of Medical Director for a Medication-Assisted Treatment Center in Michigan, a position he accepted without compensation, consistently exceeding the expectations of his role.
Between October 2023 and March 2024, Major Samuel volunteered weekly to provide wound care services to tribal Indian populations, veterans, and local community members, working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to improve patient outcomes.
