Global Volunteer Awards™ service eligibility guide
Last updated: October 6, 2026
Volunteer hours for the Global Volunteer Awards are unpaid service that benefits other people or the community. Local, remote, and international service may qualify when the activity meets the award rules and can be documented and verified.
GVRP uses the same eligible-service criteria and excluded activities as the President’s Volunteer Service Award. Global Volunteer Awards are an independent GVRP recognition program, with their own membership requirements, calendar-year rules, age groups, hour thresholds, and Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum levels.
These requirements apply to the Global Volunteer Awards. Other GVRP awards, badges, and courses have their own requirements.
What volunteer hours count?
Qualifying service must be unpaid, benefit others, and meet the Global Volunteer Awards requirements. The following are examples of activities that may qualify after review:
- Preparing meals, sorting food, or helping distribute supplies through a community service project.
- Supporting an animal shelter, library, school, community organization, or charitable service project.
- Taking part in a neighborhood cleanup, conservation project, or other community improvement effort.
- Providing unpaid tutoring, mentoring, or practical support that benefits people beyond your own family.
- Completing remote service for a genuine community purpose, such as creating requested resources, translating materials, or contributing to an organized letter-writing project.
- Helping organize a charitable fundraiser or donation drive through unpaid service. Count the work performed, rather than the amount of money donated.
- Helping with nonpartisan voter registration.
An activity is not automatically approved because it appears on this list or is offered by a familiar organization. Describe your own tasks, who benefited, and how the time can be verified.
Expense reimbursement, travel support, transit or parking passes, and other small forms of volunteer support do not automatically disqualify otherwise eligible service. Report any payment or stipend so GVRP can review it correctly.
What does not count as volunteer hours?
- Paid employment or compensated work: paid work is not unpaid volunteer service.
- Money donated: a financial contribution does not become volunteer hours.
- Political lobbying: lobbying activity is excluded. Nonpartisan voter registration may qualify.
- Religious teaching: time spent providing religious instruction is excluded.
- Leading or conducting worship: worship-service duties are excluded.
- Proselytizing: activity intended to persuade others to adopt a religious faith is excluded.
- Court-required community service: hours performed to satisfy a court order are excluded.
- Service only for relatives: helping only your own family members is excluded.
- Stipended national service: service in programs such as AmeriCorps or the Peace Corps does not qualify for annual awards under these criteria. The PVSA’s separate lifetime-award exception does not create an exception for annual Global Volunteer Awards.
These exclusions describe the activity being performed. For example, community meal service through a church may qualify even though teaching a religious class does not.
Examples of eligible and ineligible community service
| Activity | How the rules apply |
|---|---|
| Packing community food boxes at a church | May qualify when the work is unpaid, benefits the community, and is documented. |
| Teaching a faith class or leading worship | Does not qualify because religious instruction and conducting worship are excluded. |
| Writing requested encouragement letters for a service project | May qualify when the purpose, actual work, time, and completed contribution can be verified. |
| Donating $100 to a cause | The donation does not count as volunteer hours. |
| Spending time sorting donations for a community drive | The actual unpaid service time may qualify. The value of donated items does not establish hours. |
| Helping only an immediate or extended family member | Does not qualify when the service benefits only family members. |
| Volunteering with your family at a public food distribution | May qualify. Each person records their own eligible contribution. |
| Community service required by a school or club | May qualify when the actual activity meets the unpaid-service criteria. A school requirement does not make an otherwise eligible activity court-ordered service. |
How to document volunteer hours for an award
- Record each activity: include the date, organization or project, your specific tasks, actual service time, and who benefited.
- Keep supporting information: save a signed log, organization letter, confirmation email, platform record, or other evidence that helps verify the work. Include a supervisor or project contact when available.
- Use one calendar year: Global Volunteer Awards count eligible service completed from January 1 through December 31. Your membership year, service year, and requested award year must match.
- Check your award level: use the current age groups and volunteer-hour requirements. Global Volunteer Awards are available to qualifying members ages five and older.
- Submit through the official form: follow the application link on the Global Volunteer Awards page. Keeping a log or using the app does not submit an award application. Award-hour submissions are not accepted by email.
The GVRP board reviews service records and supporting information and contacts a supervisor when needed. Hours must be verified and the award requirements met before recognition is issued. Membership or a purchase alone does not establish eligibility.
The approved digital Global Volunteer Award certificate is included in the matching annual membership. Physical certificates, medals, pins, and bundles are optional purchases.
Common questions about volunteer hours
Do remote volunteer hours count?
They may qualify. Remote service must provide a real benefit to others, meet the same activity rules as in-person service, and be documented well enough to verify. Simply spending time online does not establish volunteer service.
Does church volunteering count?
Community-focused service through a faith organization may qualify. Separate those tasks from religious instruction, conducting worship, and proselytizing, which are excluded.
Can I include service completed through more than one organization?
Yes, eligible service from different organizations may be considered. Keep each activity clear in your records and group the hours by the correct recognition year. Every activity remains subject to review.
Can I submit service from an earlier year?
Past service may be reviewed when the corresponding past-year membership is available and all Global Volunteer Awards requirements are met. The service year and membership year must match.
Do course lessons or a purchased badge automatically count as hours?
No. A course, badge purchase, or other order does not establish qualifying service. Document any actual volunteer activity separately so it can be reviewed under the Global Volunteer Awards rules.
Will these hours automatically qualify for a future PVSA?
No automatic approval is promised. GVRP follows the same service-eligibility criteria to help volunteers keep useful records. If the national PVSA program resumes, its then-current eligibility, documentation, timing, certification, and availability requirements will apply separately.
What if I am unsure about an activity?
Contact GVRP with a description of the activity, who benefits, any payment or stipend, and the available verification. Ask about uncertain travel, training, or other time before including it as service.
