Chloe Jang is a sophomore at Wilcox High School who has dedicated over 176 hours of volunteer activities in 2025, gaining not only multiple valuable hands-on experiences but also exhibiting dedication and commitment across a variety of fields. Starting during the pandemic, Chloe has been an active Taekwondo athlete for what will become nearly 7 years this coming spring. From training at the dojang to medaling at national competitions, Chloe found significant joy in the art of Taekwondo and sought for ways to share that same love with others.
Volunteering proved to be the perfect opportunity- she began volunteering in 2023, and assumed the role of volunteering as a Junior Instructor in August 2025.
Throughout the course of her volunteer experience at her dojang, she has helped to instill in her students both athletic skills regarding traditional techniques as well as mental skills such as perseverance, confidence, and a deep respect for others. Working with such a wide range of students allowed her to demonstrate patience, flexibility, and the ability to adapt to different situations while giving each student the individualized care and instruction they deserve. Chloe’s passion for supporting her community through her sport is also reflected in her work as a referee at local competitions.
After watching officials at her own competitions, she was inspired to take on that role herself, and has refereed at venues such as UC Berkeley. Her time refereeing has taught her much about judgement, decisive thinking under pressure, and maintaining high levels of focus for extended periods of time. In addition to her work with Taekwondo, Chloe volunteers on Saturdays as an assistant teacher at Silicon Valley Korean School, teaching fifth-grade students about the vibrant Korean culture. A graduate of SVKS herself, Chloe recognizes the importance of maintaining a strong connection with one’s heritage in order to preserve tradition for future generations. Her role as an assistant teacher allows her to let students foster a sense of identity as well as a growing appreciation for their culture. Chloe believes that community service is not one-sided, rather, it is reciprocal and mutually beneficial, strengthening both the community and those who serve it. Her optimism, empathy, and determination model the core values of a true leader.
