Volunteer recognition can document annual service hours, leadership, student citizenship, or the results of a specific project. This guide compares opportunities from the Global Volunteer Recognition Program with national programs so you can choose recognition that fits your service, eligibility, and budget.

Several GVRP opportunities are available to nonmembers, while others require annual membership. National programs have their own rules and schedules. The President's Volunteer Service Award remains paused, and some competitive programs have already closed their 2026 application cycles.

2026 individual GVRP membership costs $100 plus shipping and applies to the January 1 through December 31 recognition year. Membership includes a welcome letter, membership certificate, custom annual member medal, and documentation support. Each person seeking an individual member-exclusive award needs their own qualifying membership. The annual member medal represents membership; earned service awards have their own approval requirements.

Volunteer awards available to GVRP members

Global Volunteer Awards

The Global Volunteer Awards™ recognize qualifying members ages five and older at Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum level. The membership year, service year, and requested award year must match. Annual eligible service is counted from January 1 through December 31, and the approved level depends on age and verified hours.

After approval, qualifying members receive a personalized digital award certificate and verification letter. Physical recognition is optional. The $35 recognition bundle includes a physical certificate, three-inch medal, and pin, plus shipping. Individual physical items are also listed.

Submit hours through the official Global Volunteer Awards form linked on the award page. Tracking hours in an app or journal does not submit an award application, and hours are not accepted by email. Review and issuance generally take place on a rolling basis, so an annual ceremony is not required to receive recognition.

Excellence in Volunteer Leadership Award

The Excellence in Volunteer Leadership Award recognizes active members who demonstrate initiative, coordination, mentoring, problem-solving, or leadership through service. A formal title and fixed minimum hour total are not required.

Explain what the member led or improved, what they personally contributed, and how others benefited. The qualifying leadership must occur during the matching membership and recognition year. Recognition requires review and approval. Choose a $10 digital certificate or a $15 printed certificate with a digital copy, plus shipping for the printed option.

Volunteer Project Impact Award

The Volunteer Project Impact Award recognizes an active member's meaningful contribution to a completed project with documented community benefit. There is no minimum project size or fixed hour requirement. Individual and team projects may qualify when the member's own contribution is clear.

A project could involve a supply drive, cleanup, educational resource, remote service initiative, or another qualifying community effort. Submit the project purpose, dates, your actions, results, and supporting evidence. The membership and project recognition year must match. Certificate options are $10 digital or $15 printed with a digital copy, plus shipping.

A complimentary Community Engagement Distinction may be available when an upcoming project is submitted and accepted in advance through GVRP's public Facebook event co-host process. The project must still be completed, documented, and approved. Calendar placement alone does not earn the award or distinction.

Sustained Commitment Member Milestone Certificate

The GVRP Sustained Commitment to Volunteer Service Member Milestone Certificate recognizes three, five, or ten qualifying membership years. The years may be nonconsecutive, and the recipient must have an active membership in the year the milestone is issued.

This recognition is based on membership records and has no volunteer-hour minimum. A personalized digital certificate is automatically included for qualifying members. The optional printed certificate costs $5 plus shipping.

GVRP recognition open to nonmembers

Global Student Citizenship and Service Award

The Global Student Citizenship & Service Award recognizes students for character, responsible citizenship, leadership, kindness, service, and positive impact. Membership is not required, and there is no fixed minimum volunteer-hour total.

Eligible students may come from traditional schools, homeschool programs, technical schools, or colleges. Families, educators, mentors, and community organizations may submit nominations. Recognition requires review. Digital and printed certificates are available, along with a printed certificate and volunteer honor cord bundle currently listed at $30 plus shipping. Military Community Volunteer Impact Award

The Military Community Volunteer Impact Award is available to qualifying active-duty, National Guard, and Reserve members, veterans, military spouses, and eligible dependents or family members with verifiable U.S. military affiliation. GVRP membership is not required.

Applicants need at least 50 qualifying volunteer hours in one calendar year. Hours from different years cannot be combined. Service must be separate from paid employment and required military duties. GVRP reviews the service records and affiliation during the application process; do not upload a military identification card.

The digital recognition package is currently $15. A printed recognition package is also available, with current pricing on the product page. This is independently administered civilian recognition from GVRP and is not an award issued by the federal government or a military branch.

Volunteer Achievement Badges

Volunteer Achievement Badges recognize specific service activities, causes, and challenges, including environmental work, hunger relief, digital volunteering, and volunteer consistency. Current listings are $5 each. Most do not require membership, but each badge has its own requirements. Complete the relevant activity and provide the requested proof before the badge is officially earned.

Community Champion Spotlight

The 2027 Community Champion Spotlight accepts free nominations, including self-nominations, from members and nonmembers. Approved nominees receive an online feature about their service and will be celebrated during the 2027 awards ceremony.

The Community Choice Award is based on verified Community Support Votes. The Community Champion of the Year is selected by the GVRP Board after reviewing service, leadership, dedication, and impact. Optional support votes cost $5 each and help fund recognition and event activities. Voting participation is not required for nominee recognition. Global Volunteer Voices

Global Volunteer Voices is an annual publication featuring volunteer stories, interviews, projects, and community impact. It offers a way to share the story behind your service. Submission is free, and membership is not required.

The annual deadline is December 15, with publication planned early in the following calendar year. Submit by December 15, 2026 to be considered for the next edition. Include your role, motivation, results, photographs, and publication permissions. Identifying information or photographs of minors require parent or guardian permission.

Publication is subject to editorial review and available space. Digital and printed copies will be available for purchase. Selected members may qualify for expanded features, while selected nonmembers may receive standard or condensed spotlights.

National volunteer awards and youth recognition programs

The following opportunities are administered by their own organizations. Their membership, age, residency, documentation, and application rules apply independently of GVRP.

President's Volunteer Service Award

The President's Volunteer Service Award remains on a temporary national pause, effective May 27, 2025. Award ordering and certifications are unavailable through the national program during the pause. There is no confirmed restart date in the published notice.

Continue documenting your service, but do not assume a future award will be available. GVRP's independently issued awards have their own requirements and do not confer presidential recognition.

The Congressional Award

The Congressional Award is a youth development program combining voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness, and expedition or exploration. Registration begins at age 13, record-book submissions are accepted from age 14, and activities must be completed before the participant's 24th birthday.

Activities completed before registration do not count. Review the program before starting a project you intend to use toward its certificates or medals.

Daily Point of Light Award

The Daily Point of Light Award recognizes sustained service and community impact. Nominees must be legal U.S. residents, and qualifying service is unpaid and not court-ordered. In most cases, service should span at least six uninterrupted months, with an exception for disaster relief. A strong nomination explains the community need, the volunteer's actions, and the results.

DoSomething campaign scholarships

DoSomething's current action listings include campaign-specific scholarship opportunities. As of October 2, 2026, Street Sweep lists a $1,000 scholarship opportunity and Ripple Effect lists a $500 opportunity, both with October 31, 2026 deadlines and eligibility limited to members in Arizona, California, Colorado, and Texas.

These are scholarship opportunities tied to particular actions, not guaranteed payments for volunteering. Follow the individual campaign rules for age, location, activity completion, and proof of impact.

Girl Scout Bronze Silver and Gold Awards

The Girl Scout Highest Awards recognize projects addressing community needs. Juniors pursue Bronze, Cadettes pursue Silver, and Seniors or Ambassadors pursue Gold. Girl Scout membership, current leadership prerequisites, and the relevant project and approval requirements apply. Consult your council and current official guidance before starting, since older prerequisite information may no longer apply.

Eagle Scout service project and rank

Eagle Scout is earned through Scouting participation and advancement. The service project is one part of the rank requirements, involving planning, developing, and leading an approved project. Candidates should use the official Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook and obtain the required approvals before beginning work.

Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes

The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes recognizes young people ages 8 to 18 whose leadership benefits people or the environment. Its published 2026 application cycle is closed. Prospective applicants can prepare project records and monitor the official website for the next application announcement.

LOral Paris Women of Worth

LOral Paris Women of Worth recognizes community impact by eligible women, nonbinary people, and gender-nonconforming people. The 2026 official rules require nominees to be at least 16 and meet U.S. residency and other criteria. Eligible activities may include volunteer or paid nonprofit work. Frequently asked questions

Can I receive GVRP recognition without membership

Yes. The student award, military community award, Community Champion Spotlight, and Global Volunteer Voices are open to nonmembers who meet their requirements. Most achievement badges are also available without membership. Check the specific listing.

Can remote or international volunteering qualify

Qualifying remote and international service may be recognized through GVRP, subject to each award's rules and documentation requirements. The military community award additionally requires qualifying U.S. military affiliation. Other national programs have their own residency and service rules.

Can I qualify for more than one GVRP award
