Getting involved with the Global Volunteer Recognition Program means choosing one or more ways to volunteer, document service, develop leadership skills, receive recognition, celebrate other volunteers, or connect a group with GVRP resources.
You can participate locally, remotely, nationally, or globally. Some opportunities require annual membership, while many projects, courses, tools, nominations, badges, and student recognition options are available separately.

Membership is the strongest starting point for a complete annual recognition experience, but it is not required for every GVRP opportunity.

Membership follows the calendar year. Select the membership year that matches the year in which your eligible service was completed.
Members who reach an eligible 3-year, 5-year, or 10-year participation milestone may receive the digital Sustained Commitment Member Milestone Certificate after eligibility is confirmed. Membership years do not need to be consecutive.

You Can Participate Without Membership
Nonmembers may participate in most monthly volunteer projects, purchase Leadership Academy courses, use the Volunteer Companion App, earn eligible Volunteer Achievement Badges, nominate a student, submit a Community Champion nomination, share a volunteer story, and attend public events when tickets are available.

How to Volunteer With GVRP
GVRP supports flexible service. You can join a featured project or continue volunteering with causes and organizations that matter to you.

Many GVRP projects can be completed from home or within your own community. Activities may take 15 minutes, several hours, or continue throughout the month.

Volunteer Through Your Own Community
You are not limited to projects organized by GVRP. Eligible service may be completed through nonprofits, schools, healthcare organizations, food programs, animal welfare groups, environmental projects, faith communities, youth programs, senior programs, local government, professional associations, and informal community initiatives.
Service can be local, national, international, in person, or remote when it meets the rules of the recognition program you are pursuing.

Lead and Share a Volunteer Project
Meaningful projects can begin with one person, one idea, and a desire to make a difference. Active GVRP members may organize or substantially contribute to a local, national, international, in-person, remote, or virtual project and document the community benefit it creates.
How Can a GVRP Member Lead and Share a Volunteer Project?
A member can plan or support a project, create a complete public Facebook event through an eligible Facebook Page, invite the Global Volunteer Recognition Program Facebook Page as a promotional co-host, complete the service, and submit the project results for review.
Advance submission is not required for the standard Volunteer Project Impact Award. It is required for GVRP calendar consideration and the complimentary Community Engagement Distinction.
How to Request Calendar and Social Media Consideration
- Create a complete public Facebook event through the Facebook Page connected to the project, organization, business, community group, or initiative.
- Include the project date, time, location or virtual participation information, purpose, organizer, registration details, safety requirements, and contact information.
- Invite the Global Volunteer Recognition Program Facebook Page to participate as a co-host.
- Send the invitation far enough in advance for review, preferably at least 14 days before the project.
- Wait for the co-host invitation to be reviewed and accepted.
- Complete the project.
- Submit the project results and documentation required for the Volunteer Project Impact Award.

Independent Project and Promotional Co-Host Notice
Unless a project is specifically identified as an official GVRP project, it remains independently organized and operated by the member, organization, or community group listed as the primary host. Independently organized Facebook events should include this notice:
This project is independently organized by [ORGANIZER NAME]. The Global Volunteer Recognition Program™ is participating as a promotional co-host to help increase awareness and does not operate, supervise, insure, or assume responsibility for the project. Participants are responsible for reviewing the organizer’s eligibility, safety, registration, and participation requirements.
The primary organizer remains responsible for project planning, permissions, supervision, accessibility, participant safety, insurance, legal requirements, background checks, transportation, fundraising compliance, and all other operational responsibilities. GVRP may decline or remove projects that are unsafe, unlawful, discriminatory, misleading, primarily commercial, inconsistent with the program’s mission, or lacking sufficient information.

The National Program Remains Paused
The Global Volunteer Recognition Program is a President’s Volunteer Service Award Certifying Organization, but GVRP does not issue or control the national program. Availability, inventory, ordering, deadlines, eligibility changes, and any future resumption are determined by the issuing organization.

Grow Through the GVRP Leadership Academy
The Leadership Academy offers self-paced online certification courses for volunteers, students, educators, pageant titleholders, nonprofit teams, volunteer coordinators, and community leaders.
Membership is not required. Courses are sold separately, and current members may receive course savings. Eligible educational activities may count toward applicable GVRP service pathways when all current requirements are met.

As of June 2026, GVRP reported 287 active members and more than 68,000 verified volunteer service hours. What is the easiest way to get started with GVRP?

Do I need to be a member to volunteer with GVRP?

Can I participate from outside the United States?
Yes. Many volunteer projects, educational courses, badges, resources, stories, and recognition opportunities are available internationally. Eligibility, shipping, documentation, and program requirements may vary.
Can remote volunteer hours count toward an award?
Remote service may qualify when it is meaningful, completed for a volunteer purpose, properly documented, verifiable, and permitted by the requirements of the specific award.
Can service completed in my own community count?
Yes. Eligible service may be completed through nonprofits, schools, healthcare organizations, food programs, community groups, local government, faith communities, professional associations, informal projects, and other qualifying service settings.
Can I lead and share my own volunteer project through GVRP?
Yes. Active members may lead or substantially contribute to an independent volunteer project and request calendar and social media consideration. The member remains responsible for documenting their individual contribution and the community impact created.
Does a project have to be submitted before it occurs?
Advance submission is not required for the standard Volunteer Project Impact Award. It is required for calendar consideration and the complimentary Community Engagement Distinction.
How does a member request the Community Engagement Distinction?
Create a complete public Facebook event through an eligible Facebook Page, invite the Global Volunteer Recognition Program Facebook Page as a co-host, receive acceptance, complete the project, submit the required results and documentation, and qualify for the Volunteer Project Impact Award. Submitting the invitation at least 14 days before the project is preferred.
Does an accepted Facebook co-host invitation guarantee promotion or an award?
No. Acceptance does not guarantee attendance, participation, donations, newsletter placement, a separate social media post, a specific level of promotion, or award approval. The completed project and member contribution must still satisfy the applicable requirements.
What information should I record when tracking volunteer service?
Record the service date, organization or project, activity description, start and end time, total hours, supervisor or verifier information when available, supporting documentation, accomplishments, impact, and personal reflections.
Is the Volunteer Companion App included with membership?
No. The GVRP Volunteer Companion App is a separate product. Purchasing the app does not automatically create or include an annual GVRP membership.
What volunteer recognition can I earn through GVRP?
Opportunities include hours-based Global Volunteer Awards, the Excellence in Volunteer Leadership Award, the Volunteer Project Impact Award, membership milestone recognition, the Military Community Volunteer Impact Award, Volunteer Achievement Badges, student citizenship and service recognition, Community Champion Spotlight recognition, volunteer storytelling, and applicable event-based recognition.
Can I currently earn the President’s Volunteer Service Award?
The national President’s Volunteer Service Award program remains paused. GVRP does not control when or whether it will resume. Volunteers should continue keeping accurate records and review the GVRP status page for current information.
Does GVRP offer student recognition?
Yes. The Global Student Citizenship & Service Award recognizes eligible students for citizenship, character, kindness, leadership, service, responsibility, and positive impact. Membership and a fixed minimum number of volunteer hours are not required.
Do I need membership to take a Leadership Academy course?
No. Leadership Academy courses are self-paced educational products sold separately to members and nonmembers. Current members may receive course savings.
Can my school, nonprofit, pageant system, or organization participate?
Yes. Groups may explore the Annual Volunteer Recognition and Leadership Partnership, purchase individual recognition products, participate in projects, use educational resources, or contact GVRP about collaboration and sponsorship opportunities.
Can I nominate myself for the Community Champion Spotlight?
Yes. Community Champion Spotlight nominations are free and open to the public, and self-nominations are welcome. Nomination does not automatically include membership, an award, event admission, travel, or lodging.
Can I share my volunteer story with GVRP?
Yes. Volunteers may submit their experiences through Global Volunteer Voices. Sharing a story does not automatically include membership, an award, event admission, or a trophy.
Can nonmembers attend the 2027 Annual Volunteer Award Ceremony?
Yes. Members and nonmembers may purchase admission at the same price. Personalized member trophies are reserved for participating active 2026 and 2027 members under the current event terms.
